Fairy Tail Season 2 Episode 1 Review

What They Say:
“The Dragon King”
Fairy Tail is back, picking up where it left off, in the middle of the Grand Magic Games! But during a short break, Gajeel leads Natsu and Wendy to the underground dragon burial ground. Wendy uses her magic to communicate with a dragon’s soul, which leads to them getting a revelatory history lesson involving two of their greatest foes!
The Review: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
We join this episode in the middle of the Grand Magic Games, exactly where the last season left off, and this episode is intent on recapping everything that a new audience needs to know in order for it to be accessible to as many people possible. That doesn’t mean it’s completely lacking in new material; there’s about 10-15 minutes of new stuff. But those other 5-10 minutes suffer because it’s overly talk-y with things that an old audience already knows and wrought with poor dialogue.
The things that happen that are new are, however, just as good as Fairy Tail has ever been and it’s great to be back with these characters. Always, it feels like there’s a warmth to the characters and the show because of the camaraderie between the characters in the guild, and in any guild. This is the driving point of the show as a whole, those bonds between friends and guild members. But to merely call them that would perhaps be insulting, because they are family after all.
When we last left them, Fairy Tail’s team of Natsu and Gajeel defeated Sting and Rogue of Grand Magic Games-favorite guild Sabertooth in a two-on-two fight. Natsu actually pushed Gajeel deep underground and defeated Sting and Rogue on his own, pushing the now-lowly Fairy Tail guild to the top of the rankings. Gajeel, underground, found a grave of dragons, which is where the second half of the episode picks up.
The main group, sans Erza, talk with Zirconis, or at least the astral version of Zirconis. He tells them the origins of Dragon Slayers and of the near-extinction of dragons. The origin, as it turns out, of the fate of Dragon Slayers and the first Dragon Slayer-turned-dragon, Acnologia. If corrupted by their power, or perhaps by some other great power, they become dragons themselves. Acnologia, 400 years ago, killed most of the dragons.
It’s the belief of the Kingdom of Fiore that Zeref is the one that turned the Dragon Slayer Acnologia into the dragon Acnologia. Zeref, as always, poses the greatest threat to the guild.
