Fairy Tail Season 2 Episode 4 Review

What They Say:
“Gray vs. Rufus!”
During the final event of the Grand Magic Games, Gray is tasked with beating Rufus, which is the key to Sabertooth’s fall. But it seems to be a one-sided battle as Rufus uses his Memory Magic to make new magic, as well as causing Gray to forget his own!
The Review: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
We previously saw Gray and Rufus duke it out against each other in the first round of the Grand Magic Games. At the time, Fairy Tail was still seen as the weakest guild that had fallen from their once great heights seven years ago. In that episode, Rufus not only easily defeated Gray with his Memory Make magic, but also everyone else participating in that round.
This time around, it isn’t so easy for Rufus. His Memory Make seems unbeatable, and even the First thinks so to an extent as well. The thing is that everyone in Fairy Tail musters power from the deepest depths to win if they have to. We’ve seen it time and time again against opponents like the Oracion Seis and Grimoire Heart. Gray is no exception here. As it’s been, Fairy Tail is fighting to get Lucy back. Gray won’t be the one to let the team down.
In what is one of the biggest non-sequitur I’ve seen, we cut to Natsu and his group underneath the city, trying to find a way out. It takes up like five minutes of the episode and is literally just a gravure shoot with Mira and Lucy. The whole thing is stupid and pointless, likely just to waste time and provide fanservice to those who need it.
Finishing up the fight against Gray and Rufus, we see Juvia constantly looking on and wondering if she should help. But on the First’s orders, and because she believes in Gray, she doesn’t. She knows that this is a fight between two warriors and it would cheapen Gray’s victory if she were to intervene.
The victory is exactly what’s right about Fairy Tail. You get to the point where you don’t know whether Gray is going to win and Rufus hasn’t even taken a hit yet. But Gray stands up, for his family, and does something spectacular.
